About The Firm

Onyx Wealth Management was founded in Durham, NC, commonly referred to as the “Bull City”. Considering “bull markets” are often synonymous with prosperous investing and the bull itself is generally associated with strength, we felt compelled to bring it all together with Onyx’s logo and its tagline of “Finding Strength in Your Numbers”. While Onyx was founded in North Carolina, we enjoy working with clients throughout the United States.

Wealth management has historically been an exclusive industry where only a select few have been able to benefit. Onyx was created to make such an impactful industry more accessible. For those who are ready to invest in themselves and their well-being, we are here to be a trusted resource that will facilitate reaching financial objectives.

Even though money is an essential tool, we realize there is more to life than how much of it you accumulate. We enjoy helping you take control of your financial life so you can also focus on other things that truly matter.

Curtis Byrd, CFP®, AWMA®, APMA®

CEO & President

Certified Financial Planner (CFP®)

Accredited Wealth Management Advisor (AWMA®)

Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor (APMA®)

Curtis was born and raised in Durham, NC. He has more than a decade of experience in a wide array of disciplines within the wealth management industry, which provides him a unique perspective that his clients and colleagues immediately appreciate.

While earning both his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Accounting from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Curtis was a starting fullback for the varsity football team. At UNC, he learned the importance of and need for competent financial advisors. Far too often stories were told of professional athletes going bankrupt within a few years of receiving their last paycheck, whether from a deficiency in financial literacy or acting on misguided advice.

Curtis is happiest when he is helping others. Coaching youth football has been one of his most rewarding experiences, as he enjoys mentoring student-athletes regarding their personal and athletic development. This same fervor for helping others propels Curtis in his profession as a Financial Advisor.

When not serving at Onyx Wealth Management, Curtis enjoys time with family, physical activity (especially golf, walks, basketball, and lifting weights), and staying involved in the community.
